Hey guys, I have a question about turbo chatter.
With the 6637 install and before the tuner I had noticed some turbo chatter when I was hard on the pedal and the trans shifted.
Now that I have the DP I notice it’s a little louder. I’m not positive if I completely understand the turbo/fuel system of my 7.3, but I do know gassers and it sound like my friends rally car. He doesn’t have a blow off because it’s against rally regs.
Is this whats happening and is it “turbo safe”?
It sounds to me that the back pressure is being forced back out the vanes of the turbo and out the 6637 making a pshhhhhh, pshhh, pshh sound. Is slowing the turbo that abruptly hard on it? Do I need to install some sort of blow-off on the charge side?
One of 2 things are happening 1. your getting surge or 2. since you said its when it shifts, it just sounds like excess air is gettin forced back out the intake when the truck shifts.
Someone else will chime in with a better idea, but it sounds like #2 to me. Kris will probably chime in too, he likes to correct me on turbo stuff haha

Is this something I need to be concerned with?
That is exactly what is happening. You can learn to anticipate it and back off slightly right at shifts or drive through it. Is it bad? Well, it certainly is not good but the extent of bad has been debated.
Installing a BOV is a no go, you'll be limiting your top end boost #s.
the psshhhh psshhhhhhh sound is very normal with the 6637, the chatter sound......if it's when you've got some decent psi flowing thru the turbo is surge. That's bad for your turbo. It can be eliminated thru the use of an ATS compressor housing, or the Wicked Wheel. Small amounts of surge aren't bad.....but if you let it go awhile, it's gonna roast the turbo

Still waiting on the delivery of the gauges.
Its ONLY when it shifts. I have not towed yet because I'm waiting on my gauges. So this is empty when I on the pedal.

Thats what I thought. Is that normal even without a tuner? Because its been doing it ever since I installed the 6637 as my first mod.
Oh, BTW; whats up with the little red line that goes to the diaphram on the turbo? I know 2 people that are telling me to remove it because I WANT MORE AIR with that fuel.?.?.?.? So far I chose to leave it pluged in where it belongs. Ya or no?
Mine used to do it only when it shifts as well. Or, if I was towing heavy. You can watch the boost gauge flutter really bad when it does it. Definetly bad for the turbo. How bad???lets not find out. Red line removed=wastegate unplugged, the wastegate will stay shut longer=more boost. However, without a boost fooler you'll set the check engine light. The psssst sound between shifts is normal with the 6637, you'll get used to that. The bad sound is the pssst pssst pssst really quick in a row, thats the bad pressure for the turbo. The wicked wheel fixed mine completely.
I have the same thing. I hear it when I climb a hill, basically no load in the bed, and it shifts. I only noticed it after I installed the 6637, no other mods. I have the normal turbo psstt, just driving arround; but the flutter noise while climbing is rather loud. So, if I just drive through it without letting up, it'll be bad. If I let off a little it should be fine?
Yes, the 6637 lets her breath right, so you hear everything. I see your not running a chip/tuner? I'm surprised stock that your getting the pssst-pssst-pssst sound. Is it this sound your getting? YouTube - 1999 Ford F350 7.3 Compressor Surge This sound is the bad one.
I did go over to my friends house who is a CAT tech and put on his snap-on scanner to see the boost levels and in 140 tune, it did indeed hit 25psi but as long as your foot is to the floor it wont make a chatter sound. It seems to do it more at 1/2 pedal.
Check this out; I was just leaving and my bud jumped in his 05 6.0 PS and told me to follow him. We went about a mile from his house down a quiet 1mile or so dead end road and we ran them side by side.
His 05 has a 5" strait pipe exhaust, The Edge "billy bad a$$" programer and true cold air intake. To make a long story short, my DP 80E was neck and neck with his rig, but the 140 took him Boy that felt great! My heart was pumping and my legs were shaking. 1st to 2nd gear were close, but top of 2nd and thru 3rd I took him by a SuperDuty truck length. I let off at about 90 because it was to fast for me and I was still pulling from him.
