Has anyone used the tow hooks that JCW sells? The ones that bolt on to the frame and have a retainer clip to keep the rope or strap from unhooking.
I can get a set at the local farming store pretty cheap, and was wondering if they are strong enough. Has anyone ever seen these break or fail in any way?
i bought some exactly like that from advanced auto parts, had to drill one hole on each side and there was one hole already in the frame that i bolted them to. theyre really strong, ive been yanked out by one, out of a mud hole with out any engine power from me, the guy had to really YANK me out.
i have walmart tow hoks on my 4x4 and wheel it at least 3-4 times a month and have had my truck pulled out more times than i have wanted to utilizing the tow hooks. they wok and still hold up to everything. my only problem is the little retaining clips breaking from bottoming out on rocks or DEEP mud. so i took em off.

I have never seen a tow hook break, but I have seen the bolts that hold them down break. If the hooks don't come with bolts use grade 5. I am gonna catch a ton of flak, but grade 8's are too brittle. They are stronger, but the 5's won't shear as easily. Just commenting from experience.
Thanks everyone! It's god to know that these work and are strong enough. For the price, ya can't go wrong.
My only other concern is weather or not the really wide two straps will fit in the hook. The ends are usually folded over at the loop and appear to fit, but I haven't actually tried it. Anyone have problems there?
The hooks are good the spring retaining clips can be a pain.
as for the right bolts to use a grade 5 will bend alittle before it breaks.
a grade 8 is alittle stronger but yes more brittle due to hardening
now when it comes to a bolt it is measured by tensile strength which boils down to clamping force and bolt stretch. now shear strength is roughly 60% of the tensile strength that is a force from the side of the bolt until it breaks.
If i were you i would go to AutoZone they have Black ones that come with Grade 5 hardware and only cost 7.99us thats 2.00 cheaper than the ones from Wal-Mart that come with only Grade 2 hardware.
