I have an 86 E-150 with the 5.0 and AOD trans. The torque converter is doing what I would call yo-yo ing in and out of lock up. At around 40-50 mph and steady throttle it wants to go in then out. Seems way too sensitive to throttle position for it to un-lock and lock back up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I did do the search deal but no luck.
its not a lockup 'clutch', its a linking of 2 shafts from the converter and essentially that is what makes '4th gear'. any chance your throttle valve cable is not hanging up? stuck sorta 'on'?
I will check on that. Is there an adjustment for this throttle cable also? Not too familiar with this yet. I assume that it is connected to the throttle assy on the upper intake? Thanks for your reply!
I found the throttle valve cable and it is working fine and no binding. I went out and drove it again tonight and paid a little more attention to what was going on. At 45-50 just light cruise in OD if I push on the accel pedal just lightly it is the motor that is going flat for a second then it catches and bangs all the slack out of tranny and rearend. It acts like a carb motor with no accelerator pump, goes flat for a bit then catches hold. It only did this when it was cold. After it warmed up I could not get it to do it again. Does this make any sense? I will drive it again tomorrow night and see if it will repeat the same way. I am sure it isn't ignition related because the whole motor goes flat. Thanks for the replies so far.
Ok, I drove it quite a bit tonight and played with different things. First off it isn't the driveline slack that is causing the banging. If I put it in direct and coast and then get back on it there is hardly any noise at all.
When it's in OD and I let up and coast for a little bit and then lightly apply throttle it bangs hard. It will surge back and then forward. It acts like maybe it wants to be in gear but it is not sure if it wants to. It's just bang, bang and then everything is fine. Fluid is bright red and proper level, no burnt smell.
