Y-converter question..

Y-converter question..
i have a 91 f150 with the 300 and was wondering if the y converter is actually a catalytic converter or just a 2-into-1?
If so then i already cut off the second converter, and now have the "Y" and an 18in. cherry bomb, i ran the truck straight off the "Y" and LOVED the sound and performance gains, then i put the cherry bomb back on and it quited down ALOT... so i was wondering if the "Y" made enough back-pressure to run it straight off of that, or if i need to keep the cherry bomb on...
