Rear suspension setup

Howdy all!

I've been futzing around with my old truck for a while trying to learn all there is to know about it. When I stuck my head under the rear I noticed an unusual spring setup that I'm not familiar with. Perhaps someone here could provide some information. This is a '65 F250.

BTW, I work in a lube shop, so I get to see the underside of many many more modern trucks, but still haven't seen one like this. I'm mainly wondering why the coils are there?

It has aftermarket helper coils common on a lot of this vintage leaf spring trucks.

Nothing special

possibly could have been added for some sort of extra saport in the rear to keep it from sagging?

possible that one of the POs might have cracked a leaf or 2 also.. so added the coils to make it ride correctly...

((just taking a stab in the dark))

never mind about the second one... garbs gave basically what i said...
