i am completely lost. i have a ford f250 3/4 ton pu with a 460 holley carb on a riser. i am in el paso and cant find anyone to rebuild it. dont know what to do, probably from this conversation you could tell i a a woman. i need help, didnt bring carb # with me. but i need references in my vicinity of 79938 or near. is it unusual on that late model of a truck to only get 6 miles to the gallon. my back tank is not working either. every time i go to a mechanic they give me a bunch of blibber blabber and want 5 to 6 hundred dollars to rebuild, or buy and install new one. or could someone help guide me to the right sites for the truck listed above.
Carmen, first off welcome to FTE.
Next you say it's a carb but then call it a late model truck, what year is it exactly?
As to find a shop that can help you in or around El Paso you could try posting in the Texas or New Mexico chapters on this site (they are down at the bottom of the forum)
Hopefully someone in there can direct you to a shop or can actually help you out themselves.
Those of us in here can maybe give you some advice if we can.
First off a rebuilt kit will come with instructions. All you need are a few basic hand tools and have at it. If you have a digital camera, take pictures as you take the carb apart, then go in reverse to reassemble. Lay all the parts out on a big towel, round parts do not move on a towel, in the order you take them apart. This isn't rocket science, it's a carb that has been around since the late 1950s in one form or another. Holley carbs are built and operate on the KISS principle. That's "Keep It Simple Stupid". The Holley web site will have help available.
Is The 4 Barrel Just For High Preformance, What Makes It Different From The Two Barrel. I Will Be Hauling Or Towing A 2500 Lbs Hay Bale. And 300 To 600 Gallons Of Water. Do I Need This 4 Or Can I Go To A 3. Again The Preformance Between A Two Or Four Is? Will A Two Barrel Effect Varie In Mileage At This Point I Am Getting 6 Miles To The Gallon With The Two Back Butterflies Open. If I Have A 1500 Lb Limit To Haul Weight In The Bed, Can I Tow More Than I Can Carry And Will A Two Barrel Or Four Barrel Do Better. I Have A Gentleman Who Will Change Four Barrel To Two And Repair The Tbi On The Rear Tank For 300.00, Is That A Good Price Or A Bad Price. Should I Go With A Two Barrel......he Explained To Me That When That Truck Was Made In Its Year, The Put Holleys On All Most All Of Them And That They Were For High Preformance Only, That It Had Nothing To Do With The Workability Or What The Use Of The Truck Was Being Used For.
Thank You So Much For Responding
Any Other Info Would Be Greatly Appreciated
Thank You, I Am Contimplating Doing It Myself. But Would It Be Better To Go Down To A 2 Barrel, I Was Told That A Four Was For High Preformance. If I Go To A Two Barrel Will I Have The Same Amount Of Preformance, Just In Not Wasting Gas And Hauling Ability. It Is A 1986 Ford F260 3/4 Ton Lariat. Most Of The Shops I Have Been To Want 5 To 6 Hundred Dollars. The Cheapest Quote Was 300 And Thats Checking Out The Tbi On The Rear Tank. I Am Getting Ready To Move About 40
Miles Farther Out Of The City And I Am And About 30 Miles From Elpaso Now. So I Probably Have To Get An In Bed Fuel Tank For Spare Gas.
Thank You Guys I Will Update You On The Rebuild With Myself Possibly Rebuilding Myself.
Actually, the 4bbl will increase mpg's. And it will increase horsepower some. So the way I see it, no downfall to the 4bbl for your purposes. The low mpg's says to me that your carb is probably running too rich. I'd just get a rebuild kit for your carb and get it tuned and you should be good to go.
Agreed, A 4 barrel will out preform a 2 barrel on the bottom end and in mpg but will out horsepower a 2 barrel on the big end. Best of both world. No a 3 barrel is totally hi-po and don't bother with it.
Carmen, Actually there was never a 460 made with other than a 4 barrel on it from the factory. So your expert isn't much of one.
Sounds like a possible blown power valve, the kit will have a new one.
