There are two timing marks (little dots stamped into the sprockets), one on the crank sprocket, anf one on the camshaft sprocket (youll have to remove the timing chain cover to see them). Turn the engine by hand with a breaker bar until the mark on the cam sprocket is pointing down and the mark on the crank sprocket is pointing up, that'll be tdc on power stroke.

On the front of the engine there should be a pointer next to the harmonic damper. There should also be a mark on the damper. Disconnect the ignition coil. Remove #1 sparkplug, hold your finger/thumb over the hole, and turn the engine over. When you feel pressure on your digit, that is the compression stroke. Watch the marks mentioned above, and line them up. This will be TDC.

well, yeah, but thats the easy way lol. I have heard of using a screwdriver and sticking it down in the #1 plug hole, then rotationg the engine until the screwdriver comes out to its highest point, but without a distributor to reference, I wasnt sure how to know whether it was on the compression or exaust

I found that using the 0 on the harmonic balancer and lining it up with the crankshaft sensor got me where I wanted to be of course I made sure it was on the compression stroke and double checked the position of the piston with an old CB antenna
