[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Mar-02 AT 02:14 PM (EST)]i am building a 1979 ford f150 4x4 and i am wanting to run either a fuel injected 302 or a fuel injected 351w.I am also running the transfercase and automatic transmission. I will be running 36 in tire with 3.73 gears. I am using the truck to go back and forth to school, go play in mud some, and i probly be pulling a trailer some times.I need it to get good gas milage for a truck but still have enought power to play and work ANY OPIONOS.
one thing, those 3.73 gears and 36's is gonna suck bad, im getting 4.56 gears to move mine. i would get a 351 cause you can get more power for less, im gettin a 351 after my 302 goes out that puts out 350-400 hp.
once you get your gears and your engine in youll be set, theres really no such thing as good mileage, i get about 8-10 mpg and im not complainin about it either. my truck is my daily driver too.
any other opionos on the 302 or 351 ,remember it is alos going to be a fuel injected motor and does anybody have a 4.10 ring and piono for a 1979 dana 44
ONE PHRASE SHOULD CLEAR THIS ALL UP. There is no replacement for displacement. Also I have to agree with the other gentleman, I have 3.55's with 35's and a 351. I will be buying 4.56's next.
I would go with the 351w more hp/tq. By the wat I happen to have a 351w out of a 69 mustang for sale.If any one is inbterested hget back to me.Thanks MrB.
I want to go with the fuel injected to kinda restomod it,and to get a couple more mpg out of it and it would be different.Dont worry what ever i go with it wont be stock when i am finished with it the motor will be bored, balance , trick flow intake, gt40 heads {if i go with the 302},then a set flattop pistons. i have also found the 4 10 gears.
I just bought a parts truck that has a good running 240 6cylinder if anybody is interested
i just finished swapping from a 302 to a 351 in my f-250 and the difference is night and day. i have 33's with 3.73 and the truck smokes everything but the most seriously modified 4x4's at the local mud drags. the only modifications are exhaust and a perfomer intake
i also wanted to ask you if you were using a speed density type fuel injection or a mass air because the old speed desity system i had gave me nightmares
Go with the 351. I just finished swapping my 6 for a 351w. Could not be happier. This is my daily driver. With the 6 I got about 12-14 mpg. With the 8 I get at least 18. Make sure that when you get that EFI 351w, you get the computer. Sometimes they can be hard to find.
i would say go with the 351w thats what i have inf my f350 and i also ihave 36 in tires with 373 gearing....... and woudl say yes u need new geering cuz it sucks bad... i was lookin to get the front and rear with 4:11 or 4:56's but the guy wanted 3 grand to do itso gotta wait a lil bit on that one but if u get the gearing with the 351w ull liek it alot
duk
But whick motor would get better mpg the 302 or 351 on a 5 speed.ANd does anybody know where i can look to get the specs on these motors for toqrue and hp?
I have a carbed 351w and a FI 302 and the 351 gets better mileage with more power. The 302 has lots of km on it (around 300,000) and the 351 has lots of performance parts. I am positive you should go with the 351, trust me on this one.
