So I bought a can of VHT nightshades and tinted the tail lights and 3rd brake light. only 2 coats of tint and 4 clear......more effort went into prep than the actual painting.
Anyways, I really like the mod and I wasn't too worried about the back-up light since I have a set of aftermarket lights under my trailer hitch that will light up the whole street.
I have looked at aftermarket tail lights before and...well...they look too aftermarket if you know what I mean and I wanted the stock look so this was my alternative. They do reduce the light slightly and I can see your points of view regarding that...I'm thinking of upping the bulb brightness to compensate.
No security. I draw a nice government retirement check and now just have a courier/delivery job to pad the pocket. I only work 25-30 hours a week, driving 1000 +/- miles, and I really enjoy it.
I think your tail lights look great. Brighter is kinda nice, but look is important too
What all did you have to do to prep the tail lights?
Lots!
First I gave them a 300 light sanding to take out all the nicks and scratches and what ever wax residue might be on there. Then it was a 600 grit sanding to take out the scratches from the 300 grit....sounds stupid but to use 600 to remove imperfections would have taken me a lot more elbow grease. Then I sprayed the tint which is nasty stuff (very toxic), let dry and smoothed out the paint with a 2000 grit wet sand.....sprayed the low spots for an even finshed and then it was a wet sand again. Then (gasp) I spray on 4 coats of clear finish....one light, 2 med, and 1 heavy layer. Finished it off with some very mild rubbing compound to smooth it out.
They DO look good! Thought about tinting the windows???????? In this photo it doesn't look like they are dark but in your gallery they do look dark. I really like the lights behind the grille!
