In the near future, I would like to buy an early 80's F-150 and make an off road truck out of it. I was just wondering what engine would be good in it. I would like to go with a 351W. or a 460. I would probably get a lift on it and put about 33-35 tires on it. I would like a 460 because of the torque, but then again there is such huge aftermarket support for the 351.
what are yall's opinions on this.
Also should I try to go with Fuel injection, or should I stick with a carb?

Go 460!!! I have a 90 Bronco with a fuel injected 351 and it is ok on power but definitely not enough. With a 460 you should definitely go fuel injection if you plan on wheeling it. A perfect demonstration on why can be seen in the 2000 Top Truck Challenge videos by Fourwheeler magazine. There were two carbureted 4X4s that stalled out and had to winch because they were on too steep of a hill and couldn't get enough fuel from the carb. Yes fuel injection is more expensive but it is also much more efficient. By the way if you go with fuel injection make sure it is MAS air fuel injection and not speed density. With speed density you are extremely limited with the mods that you do since there are set amounts of air and fuel based on throttle position regardless of what performance upgrades you have done to the motor. I'd go with a 460 with MAS air fuel injection. There are aftermarket mods, you just have to look a little harder, plus by boring and stroking a 460 you can have a 514. Plus there is no replacement for displacement.
