hello, Iv got a 99 expy 4X4 eddie w 150,000 on it. mpg is 8.7 I know horrible right!! problem is runs great desent power. always do oil changes every 3000, tires are inflated to spec, just had both diff fluids changed and put the friction mod in the rear from ford, also had the tc fluids changed so I dont think its a resistence problem. havent changed the fuel filter yet thats next. I guess my question is with mpg this bad wouldnt it run like crap if it were the plugs, filter, o2 exc. also do mostly city driving and I dont kill the gas pedal either. any suggestions would be greatly app. with prices like this either get better mpg or I have to get rid of it. I love the truck so Id rather fix it.
Do you do much sitting with the truck running also? The onboard computer on my 03 reads 9.7 mpg right now. I'm ok with that because I know the last 3 months have been 100% stop-and-go city driving. And if the wife and kids are with me when I have to make a quick stop, they'll stay in the truck in the a/c while I run in the store real quick.
How many miles do you drive? I've put on less than 1,000 miles in the last 3 months, so the poor mileage hasn't broke the bank. If I was driving 1,000 miles a month, I'd probably reconsider.
I'd say with some more maintenance you can improve closer to 10 mpg. If you're looking for much more than that with mostly city driving, I'd probably reconsider. I've read where some guys have had good results with cleaning the IAC (I believe).
I have a 99 not the stock wheels and tires. I get about 10 or less in the city, but on the freeway I get about 14 just a gas hog. This last weekend towing a 20' ski boat I got about 8-9 mpg
I have a 99 EB 2WD 5.4 with 163,000 on it. I just came back to FT. Worth from Phoenix and got 18.3 in the 1050 miles. Half of the trip was with a head wind. I usually run 5 to 7 mph less than the speed limit, except in west Texas where the speed limit is 80, there I ran 70 mph. Use cruse where ever its safe. Put a can of Sea Foam into the gas tank to clean the system and injectors.
You could be getting better MPG than you think, it depends on a couple of things. First, how are you calculating the mileage, using an onboard computer, or are you dividing the miles by gallons at a fill-up? Also, are your tires the stock size or are they larger than stock? Tires that were put on that are larger than stock will throw off both your speedometer and odometer, by causing them to read less than actual. In this case you are racking up more miles than the odometer is counting.
