Question starting

I have a 78' 4x4 f250 400cid & a 79 4x2 f250 400cid. Both of them when hot have starting problems. It is like the battery is dead. They both start fine when cold. If I drive to the gas station or store or something when I try to start it, the starter turns slowly as if the batt. was dying. The batt. is new, I have gone through batt.'s and the same still happens. This happens to both of my trucks. Is this a common problem. What is the cause?

Since the problem is the starter is actually turning over slowly, this is usually caused by two things - late ignition timing or starter heat soak. Late ignition timing can "fight" the starter trying to turn the motor over. Check your ignition timing while the motor is running, and if it checks out OK, most likely you need to replace your starter (assuming you have stock exhaust manifolds and not headers that could be causing the problems). It wouldn't hurt to check the resistance of your battery cables either. My money is on the starter.
