If you were on dry, solid pavement, the skipping and hopping is probably normal. Since you have some much more traction, the front wheels are kind of fighting the back wheels on which direction everything wants to go. It's a good thing to engsge 4WD every once in a while but it's probably best to do it off-road or in loose soil to avoid all the unnecessary stress. The pinging...I dunno on that one...what kind of ping? Valve ping? Mechnaical ping?

You didn't say if you were on a hard packed surface or sand or dirt.
The wheels travel at different speeds during tight turns. The 4WD on Ford superduty trucks has no differential between the front and rear axles. So, on hard surfaces the only way to compensate for the different distances traveled by the axles is for the wheels to skip - slip. On soft dirt or sand track you don't notice this skip - slip, but it is happening.
4WD should not be used on hard surfaced roads, driveline damage can occur.
Like the others said, don't use 4wd on hard surfaces. As far as the pinging goes, not really sure what you are describing, but I'd definitely check the u-joints on the front drive shaft.
yah thanks for the info i was on some pretty tuff dirt so that explains why it was skippin and hopin, and the pingin noise is only when i excelerate and only when its in 4wd but i will look at my front u joint have ne other ideas on what it night my
thank
