4wd hi clunking 97
My 97 4.6 is making a loud clunking noise while poking thru the sand at the beach. While in low it does it but not as often, it seems to go out of 4wd without notice. The sound feels like it is coming from the transfer case but it could be traveling. Amy ideas? it is manal shift on the floor with auto hubs.

Sounds like the same noise i had once on my 92 F-150 4x4. I found that my tranny mount was broken and engine mounts. The torque it was producing and axle wraping in 4 wheel low was causing the yoke on the drive shaft to slip . The whole motor was about to flip out of the engine compartment. She's a tuff ole truck though. When we play we play hard. Try checking out those mounts. If they look like there cracked there probably torn all the way through.

I had a similar sound at one time and it turned out that my hubs were shot replaced the hubs and it worked great. My truck would act like it would lose traction or slip out of four wheel drive associated with the clunk. Have someone watch and see if your front end stops pulling when you get the noise. Hope this helps.
