Knock feeling in steering wheel

I have been noticing lately when I hit certain bumps in the road I feel a knock through the steering wheel. It doesn't happen that often but I'm starting to wonder. Could this be ball joints?

It has just over 75,000 miles and no lift. What can I do to check the different components in the front end? I've never touched a front end before and would like to do the work myself....if possible. I did notice the knock once today while cornering (there was a bump) but mostly when it happens I am going over bumps that are in the streets around the Las Vegas area. Thanks for replying.

if it is a bad ball joint just jack up the front tires and rock the tire, if you have movement (as in a up and down motion) then that is usually a sign of a bad ball joint.
