I found these numbers on the left rear of the block 1N129307 the block is a 71 429 (D1VE 6015) there is no letters after these numbers. second question where is the crank casting number?any help would be appriciated
the 1N number is probably the serial number of the block. if you had the original car or truck the engine came from, it should match the vehicle ser# (that is what is meant by numbers matching car, the ser# on the engine, tranny, etc all match the car ser#, so you know that is the original drivetrain that came with the car and not a clone). ( i am not 100% sure this applies to Ford, but dodge and GM used this method)
the crank number is usually on the first crank throw. you might have to take a wire brush to it to read it.
a 429 crank will have 4U casting number.
a 460 crank will have a 2Y casting number (external balanced 460's have a 3Y casting number)
there might be some other letters behind the above numbers (A or a B or comination of these letters) but they are just revision letters.
but you also said you don't have the heads on this block. easy method to determine if you have a 429 or 460 is to measure the stroke. a 429 will have a 3.59" stoke while the 460 will have a 3.85" stroke (where the 385 engine family gets its name from)
