Question engine swap?

Hey out there.I got a 1988 f-250 4x4 with the 7.3 liter diesel. It also has a 5 speed trans. My question is ,The tranny i have is a one piece unit,no removable bell housing. So is there a V8 gas engine out there that will bolt up to this trans?Im tired of the diesel and cant stand the noise any longer, plus the 320,000 kms, thats right im up here in canada,we dont use miles up here.lol.So if any one can help me that would be great. Thanks and happy motoring.

The ford 460 takes a zf5 5 speed, but it is different from a diesel zf5. You could probably sell your superior diesel engine and trans for enough to pay for a used inferior 460.

your tired of a diesel? wow.... amazing ive never heard of some one not liking a diesel... who would want to get rid of a 7.3 or a ZF5? i know that the 7.3 is inferiror to the 6.9 but putting a gasser in where a diesel started out thats just sacrilege... You really think a 460 will have the same ammount of stump pulling axle snapping torque as a diesel sure the N/A wasnt the most powerful motor out there, but the 460 will be a real disappointment i have both, a 87 f-350 with a 460 and a 4 speed and ill take my 6.9 with a c6 over it any day

Nothing will bolt up. Sell the truck and buy one with a gas engine, just be sure you realize it will fly, past anything but a gas station. You will see a mileage drop from around 16 mpg to around 6 mpg.

Whoa Whoa now... Blueovals how can you say that a 7.3 is superior to a 6.9? That is crazy talk... Ask Dave S. lol. Maybe a little more power, but I can beat the heck outta my 6.9 and still out last a babied 7.3... lol.

Switchback... as far as switching a diesel for a gas motor, I would not do it, but to each his own. Like Andy said, if you are gonna do it, sell your diesel for enough to buy you a gas truck. You could probably sell the diesel for enough to buy a gasser, pay the repair bills, and pay for a few days of gas... lol. We have a gas truck. a 1974 F100 with a 390 FE motor. On a good day it gets 8 mpg. Now that I have the injectors fixed on my truck, I get about 15 city. Good luck to you if you do sell it. I think I can speak for most of us when I say that you are welcome back when you realize that you cant live without that wonderful smell in the morning.

Sorry for the long post.

I don't know where switchback is from but around here (Oregon) you can get non-turbo IDIs pretty cheap. The 460 trucks bring at least as much as the NA IDIs.

I really like IDIs and I also have a '97 460 and two IDIs, as well as a 351/5.8L and just like everybody else on here I would get rid of the gassers WAY before the IDIs.
I would recommend reading a few posts on here and learning more about your engine before you get rid of it.
REMEMBER this is all coming from a DODGE GUY TOO!
Actually I wouldn't put ANYBODY'S gas engine in place of an IDI. The ONLY motor I like better is a Cummins.

I have to agree...IDI's are cheap up here in BC!
On Craigslist there going as little as $150.00...which is pretty lousy for me....I'm trying to sell my 6.9 with all sorts of new parts, rebuilt tranny and the engine hoist...no bites yet!

I have over a $1000.00 in near new or new parts...the rebuilt tranny and clutch has only about 35,000 miles [another $2000.00] on it and I'm throwing in the [used once] engine hoist for $1000.00....but no calls yet.

A good running 460 with the right gearing may be able to pass a NA IDI pulling a hill with a moderate load.

But the MPG and how long the 460 will last when compared to an IDI, no contest the IDI wins.

Most guys I know with 460's are getting around 8 MPG.
Ike caused regular to jump to 4.05 a gallon, that works out to 50 cents per mile for gasoline.

I am getting around 12 MPG with my 6.9, fuel is 4.16 a gallon here now.
So fuel is 34.6 cents per mile for me.
