Ball Joints....................

2002 F-350 4x4 PSD

So Im attempting to get to my ball joints which are worn badly.
Ive taken all the brake stuff off and the hub is out.

4 big bolts from the inside next?

Anything i should be aware of ?
After i get those 4 bolts out is the whole hub assemble going to come out including the axle?

Got it down to taking out the axle.
What holds the axle in ?

I believe those are held in by c clips, you would have to remove the spiders in order to get the axle out

Get in behind the U-joint yoke and pry outward, firmly.
That will release hold that the big outer seal has on the shoulder and the axle will pop right out.

What Timing? Bad wheel bearing!

Sorry if this is a hijack. My wife and I were on our way to BTS last night when I suddenly heard the sound of driving on the shoulder rumble strip...............I wasn't driving on the shoulder!!!! Then we heard the sound of light intermittent metal grinding.

I immediately got off I-44 still in St Louis (it was a blessing we were only 50 miles from home) to check out the truck. Tires looked good and inside I kinda knew what it probably was so I felt each rim.....my right front rim was almost too hot to touch. I jacked it up and spun the wheel; I found my grinding metal noise and it wasn't the brake wear indicator.

So $235 lighter we got roll-back towed to the driveway. So now after finding out that the Ford OEM sealed bearings are approximately $350 EACH, I'm leaning towards replacing everything with the Dynatrac Free Spin set-up and replacing all the ball joints since I'm in there.

Here's the question: Which are working out best? The Moog kit from powerstroke shop, NAPA Golds or Dana's; all with grease fittings. I've spent the last four hours reading the ball joint posts but would like a fresh opinion. Thanks as always! V/r Les

Did it vibrate to start with?
Thats what mine is doing?
I dont think the ball joints are making it vibrate but they had to be done while Im looking for whatever else is making it vibrate.

No vibration. The sound started immediately after turning onto I-44 from the I-55/I-44 split in St Louis and was unmistakable. We just finished taking three long trips and didn't notice anything previous. The day prior we picked up a heavy load of firewood so who knows.....we're just glad it didn't happen in no mans land. That's why I want to go through the entire front end.....once. V/r Les

Both times when my hub bearings went out the abs light came on in the dash. Then the grinding started a while later.

Wish I'd of had an ABS light, but it could've turned out much worse. In the big scheme of things $235 will be forgotten. Anyone have an opinion on Dynatrac Free Spin and ball joints? Thanks!
