Hey guy's it's been awhile.....
well I swaped out that tired 302 for what I thought was a better 302...
And I would have been better off fixing the old one. I had to take it to a MECH. just to get the timming right and after 2 bills he got it running I drove it ( almost ) home about twenty care free miles, feeling pretty good . when I start to hear this light tap so I take it easy on her, and get her to the MECH. down the road....who I have talked to a few times but have never used. and ask him to take a look at it ,..he says bottom end knock...( knew that )
4 bills to pull it and take a look, calls me in two days and says rod bearing, so alright change em' out. another bill, puts it back together and give's it back and same knock! Dang! so now he says must be a wrist pin... I guess they don't look any harder than they have to these days. so he says he will eat the labor if I buy the parts. My question is shoud I first of all go back? and second ,just do the pins or just eat it and buy new c-rods and pistions and ring and just be done with it! by the way the motor is an 89' and to be fair the main bearings needed to be replaced. so what would you guys do?
The wrist pins are not known for being a problem on 302's. You may find when it's apart it's a cracked piston skirt from the engine being overheated at some time. I would go back and negotiate a rebuild. You will have to buy pistons anyway if he is going to change the pins, since it's very difficult to press the pins out without damaging the old pistons. But like I said, I doubt it's a pin.
You can also take a sparkplug wire off and drive it, and see if the knock gets less or goes away. Do this for each cylinder. You should be able to find the one that is knocking this way, if it is a problem in one of the cylinders. Fuel pumps and such are also known to make knocking and pecking noises.
I know the 89 302 car engines had a knock recall on them - years back. Rod bearings were replaced. Our CV knocked even after the recall, sounds like a diesel when idling. Had a chance to pull it apart a few years after bearings put in, couldn't find anything wrong. Did a quickie rebuild-no boring or crank. About 80k miles later it still has that same knock....
