Ok i brought my truck to the dealership nearby to have the injectors tested. they called me and said that the injectors were fine but told me that there was a miss in the number 5 cylinder and that the compression was around 100 pounds low. i already knew that there was a miss just by listening to it and was told before i bought the truck that there was low compression in a cylinder. they told me that the problem was a bad exhaust valve which would explain all the bluish smoke coming out. they quoted it at 1900 to get it fixed. that sounds a little high to me and was just wondering what a good price might be around
ive looked on ebay and i can find a rebuilt head for aroung 350. would that save me money if i just brought that to the shop and had them do it or wont it matter much
You do not need to pull the motor technically, but it's rare to find a mechanic strong enough to maneuver a 110lb cylinder head onto a brand new gasket in the correct place without messing it up. While the engine would be out it would be a good time to replace anything else youve been putting off, like new oil pan or leaky exhaust manifolds. Plus its not that much more involved than what you have to do to get to a head, maybe another 5 hours to get it out and another 6 to put it back in. Ive got some good experience pulling 7.3's
