Unhappy amp meter

We just switched a gauge panel from lights to gauges and the amp gauge cought on fire! help

The dash wiring harness between the two setups is completely different. You can't put a gauge panel on an on\off light harness without changing the harness as well. That's all there is to it.

Were do the wires feed from the dash wires go were for gauges

Fmc400, if he changed plugs and put the correct colored wire from the light plug to the gage plug in the correct position for gages, would it not work?
(The plugs have numbers for each wire position)
Don't they have the same number of wires and colors, just are installed in different positions and the plugs are different.
I know you can stick a tiny screwdriver into the end of the plug and pop the wires out without damage. You would have to take each wire out at a time to make sure it was placed in the correct position.
But I do know you need to switch the short harness coming off the alternator. This harness is completely different from lights to gages. I think it is a fused shunt.
