Hi guys I need to replace the power steering on my 55 F100. I t seems some one has put a ford power steering box in the truck that hangs below the frame rail so far that the leaf spring smashes in to the steering box when going over bumps. Not very safe or smart. Has any one installed a rack and pinion kit for the straight axle? And what do you think of it ? I was told by a local chassis shop that this is not the best solution. As he recommended a cross link set up would be much stronger and would eliminate bump steer retaining the solid front axle. Is the Toyota box a better choice? Like to know your thoughts thanks!
I have the Toyota box; it is simple and installed very easily. If you get one make sure you get the toyota hoses also; you can rework the ends to fit whatever power steering box you use.
The toyota box is an excellent choice. Its small and compact and fits in the original locations. You will need to either buy a bracket or fabricate one to mount the box. I have drawings of two different style brackets in my gallery.
The toyoto box that you need is from a 79-85 Toyota 4x4's
I put a 88 ISUZU TROOPER 4X4 P/S box in my 53 merc
it is small & it fits real nice.even the pitman arm fit
the merc drag link.I dont know if this will work on your truck
but it is worth looking into.I only paid $25 for the P/S box,
check it out you have nothing to lose.Good luck. BOB
