Clock spring replacement question

I need to replace the clockspring in my 1994, I have looked around past posts for help and I am pretty confident in most of the procedure. I was just wondering what is the correct or safest way to discharge the electrical system after disconnecting the battery? I have seen everything from leaving the cable disconnected for several hours before starting the teardown to taping the brakes and turning on the headlights.
Thankyou in advance

the ford service manual says after batt. is disconnected wait one minute.

that is the time required for backup power supply in air bag diag. monitor to deplete its stored energy.

when removing or moving air bag around it is important to keep away from face.

static electricity can set it off.

Yep, had one go off in an accident once, don't care to again. I will be sure to ground myself first and keep it as far away from myself as possible.
