Something not fun to find out, that your 4x4 doesn't engage and you don't know it when you try to transverse something impossible in a 4x2 and hard but very possible in a 4x4. I definatly was not too "thrilled" when I don't feel the front tires pulling and I'm now stuck in a place where 4 wheel drive woulda pulled right out. Do ya'll know how small I felt when my best friend's Jeep had to pull me out? Arrrrrg......the case is full of a half and half mix of SAE30 and Mercon ATF. I looked under it tonight and it looks like I need to tighten up some stuff and to get a new bushing where the 4x4 shifter pivots on the transmission. Oh well, I'm gonna love the day I get to pull him out.
Before I go off-road I go to an empty field, crank the wheel to the left, stick my head out, and spin the wheels to make sure the 4x4 is working and flinging.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Sep-02 AT 10:25 PM (EST)]I know where your coming from . Long ago I used to own a 92 Chevy 4x4 and had the tranny rebuilt at a GM dealer here in town and when they re-installed the tranny/Tcase they forgot to hook up the wiring connector that activates the vacuum lock on the front axle . When I got the truck back , same day my buddy calls me on his cell. and is stuck in his Jeep in one of the worst situations you can imagine . Well I`m off to the rescue ( at night ) and get there and shift into 4x4 and NO 4X4 !!!! Of course this happened in the first big mud pit . Now we are both stuck . It would take 5 pages of writing to explain the rest of the evening . Next day I drove back to the GM dealer to complain and the new tranny went out on me , not even 50 miles on the rebuilt !!! I was so freakin mad when I got there with the tow truck you could hear me yelling a mile away . Got tranny number 2 installed and sold the thing . Last time I ever drove and owned a CHEV Truck! And you know the service manager had the extreme ***** to try and charge me an hours labor for doing a diagnostic on the front axle to check the vacuum actuator for faults AFTER I told him one of his guys forgot to hook up the leads that actuated the front diff. Thanks for letting me vent , that experience still makes a little ticked , if ya can tell
