Not real sure how to explain this so here goes. When letting up off the accelerator quickly, it is like the rear end is trying to catch up and you can feel a light jerk. Anyone know what this sounds like? Thanks
Does it HOWL ,, maybe like a loud tire noise, all the time, gets loud and soft according to speed? I just picked up an Excursion and it has a pretty loud howl, but I can not feel any "slop" in the ring and pinion, on accel or decelleration, but did hear and feel what I thought was a "gear wind up" but so far only one time,, only had the SUV two days, so still digging for an answer before I throw a wrench at it..
The light jerk upon decceleration might be dry splines on the driveshafts slip joint.
Very common for two piece driveshafts to never get serviced, and these splines should be greased.

I agree, and will for sure check that out. It seemed that what I hears was not gears clanking back and forth as I would expect from the driveshaft splines, but a planitary gear set "catching" up or slowing down,, I am NOT a tranny guy, nope, nix, never.. Engines used to be my thing, getting on the AARP side now a days..
I just purchased this 00 Excursion about 2 days ago, and you know how it is, NOW I am finding everything wrong!! It has 144,420 miles, clean as a whistle, XLT, leather, split 2nd row, and have 3rd row out for the dogs already, (my dog goes with me everywhere), I love the electric side back windows, like big vents to exract all the dog jet EXHAUST fumes!! , but now the cruise does not work, of course we never got on a road to go fast enough to try it,, oh well, let the buyer beware, I can handle it!! I feel ok with the 5K I spent for the SUV,, specially now that I see,, The KING of the SUV's all over here!!
