I would start by checking the condition of the front drive line and it's ujoints. Then I would check the knuckle and ball joints. Remove the diff cover, inspect the gears and the pold gear oil for metal shavings. If all seems normal, check the wheel and needle bearings.

If it's an 80-96 there is no diff cover, you'd have to take the whole TTB out.
