Hey guys... Got an interesting one for 'ya... CEL is on in the truck, only my code reader shows no codes, and it says the light shouldn't be on, so I'm confused. Truck starts and runs just fine. Code came in a couple months after getting the new CPS under recall, so I thought that MIGHT be it. Not so much (but now I have a good spare!). My scanner isn't a very good one (it's one of the Actron ones from Advance), but it should at least be able to figure something out. Are there diesel specific codes that a regular scanner won't pick-up? I don't want to have to pay the dealer just to throw the computer on it , but it's looking like that might be the solution right now... Thanks in advance for any help!
I don't know if that type scanner can read the diesel specific codes, but if it will allow you try to clear the trouble codes with it even if it shows none are present. Then see if the CEL light goes out.
Mine wouldn't let me clear codes if none are present... The one at Autozone attempted to clear them even though it couldn't read them, with no luck.... I got the hookup from a local shop for a couple bucks... P1280 for the ICP.
On the side, there was an old code stored in memory, P0733 3rd gear ratio wrong... I THINK it may be from back when my Sonnax valve failed and it wouldn't shift to OD, before I ordered the BTS VB. Either way, the guy cleared it, and that code didn't come back...
P1280 IS Low ICP. Need to get someone in the area with AE software or scanner to clear the code and monitor ICP to see what the issue would be. I would guess the ICP sensor first, but I wouldn't start throwing $ at it without hooking up a scanner, pulling the codes, clearing, and seeing if it comes on again.
While that would be nice, I don't think I'll get lucky enough to score access to any AE software. FWIW, I think the sensor just conked out completely... I unplugged it and drove it around, and it didn't change a thing, so I'm under the assumption at this point that the PCM is in open loop mode for the ICP and is using "estimated" values... Plus, the thing runs fine, the typical IPR problems I've seen result in some sort of driveability or idle issue, and I have neither... If the light wasn't on, you'd never know something was wrong...
And, of course, I can't get lucky enough to score one on E-bay right now, either... Guess I'll have to wait till Monday, and call the local IH dealer so the Ford dealership won't completely drain me...
When you unplugged it was there any oil in the top? I just learned (thanks to these guys) that's a sign it's gone bad. Mine was full of oil, and it was bad.
Nope... No oil... I think it may have just signed off. I suppose I could attempt to check it for continuity or resistance, but I have no specs on the sensor itself....
Well, if you pull the ICP sensor you will get a code and a SES light, the PCM will go to a default table and keep the truck running. But I'm not sure if disconnecting the ICP sensor will result in a P1280 code, thought is was a P1210. Someone smarter will chime in.
Hopefully you can hook up with someone locally on FTE and clear the trouble codes before having to go to the dealer. Perhaps a diesel performance shop in the area?
Can anyone remeber if disconnecting both batteries will reset the SES light?
