Many mechanics and I have used stethascopes over and over trying to nail down the location, but it doesn't last long enough to get a good listen.
I've had the timing chains, guides, tensioners and lash adjusters replaced.
I thought about a bolt backed out on flywheel bolt or something, but nothing really make sense.
I'm at the point know to where I'm going to just drive it until it breaks and then I'll know what it is.
I have to pull my TT to HOuston on Tuesday and really can't spare the time of a break down.
I think I've heard that sound from my truck to me when I first heard it I thought I'd spun a rod bearing.
I had the exhaust studs changed out on the right bank and coincidently have not heard it since. Mine only did it on first start up after over night setting.
My 99 has pistion slap and that isn't anywhere near as disturbing a sound.
Good luck
I don't think I've ever been on a forum where threads get moved down so quickly. That's good, Lots of activity!
I do have a broken stud on the rear most exhaust hole. I can hear a little tick from that when I'm riding next to a solid wall with the window down. It's certainly something to look at.
My truck dose that too when it heats up, the oil pressure drops and it knocks. It will do it constantly thought, not intermitintly. I might try heavy'er oil and see if that helps, it did for me.

I've added STP goop t it and it didn't change it.
I'll keep fishing though.
Sounds like a bolt or nut rattling around in the bell housing. maybe from the torque converter. Is the rubber plug still in the bell housing? Kinda has that aluminum tone to it. My funny sound was on a 81 Monte Carlo, nearly every time you would turn to the left there would be a loud pop. After a couple of years of checking everything under the car my lil bro found a fender shim under a bolt with the edge of the shim almost touching the frame. Turning would make the body shift and the shim would rub on the frame. What a pain.
