Talking how much have you pulled?????

i have a 90 f250 351w 4x4 5-speed. i think its a heavy duty not sure but the hubs on it are pretty beefy. i am going to put a ball in the bed to pull a horse trailer and was wondering how much i could pull without hurting the truck. i know ford rates them but they rate them low. also ill get some pics up of the design i have in my head for the ball mounting. to see what you guys think of it. oh yeah ive got 3.55 gears in it, yea they suck for pullin.

I've pulled a F150 the same as mine on a flatbed on a 150 mile trip, I'm guessing somewhere around 7000 lbs. with my 302/F150, didn't see OD much but did it without complaining. Never would have towed that much without trailer brakes.

There is certainly more than one size of horse trailers out there, how big are you talking?

You are going to want a lower rear than 3.55.

I have a 94 f250 HD 351w with the same gears and just recently I had to tow a grand cherokee on a oversized flatbed trailer, we could have fit another car on the back. We figured it was between 10k and 12k with no problems on and off the interstate. From experience I don't think you'll run into any problems.

this is my idea

i know 3.55 aren't great for pullin. but my buddy has a 3000 lb 24 ft goosy that i need to pull just once or twice to trade some horses. i want about a 16 footer, don't know what it would weigh, 1800 lbs???? i hope you can look at this pic if not tell me and ill do something. its my design for a ball mount. the steel is 1/4" thick and 3" by 3" angle iron. the plate shown is either 1/4" or 1/2" by 6"x6". its just and idea using stuff that i have and that i can pilfer from the job site. i was looking for a big 1/2" thick plate thats 3.5' by 3.5' or whatever i ned to catch the frame on either side.?????? but couldn't find one. ill have the pic in a minute

I pulled a 38-40' RV trailer down to Englishtown in a wicked rainstorm for the swapmeet once. Prolly close to 100 miles.
Trailer brakes shorted out. Damn near pushed me off the ramp in New Brunswick.
Wayyy overloaded for a receiver hitch, but She pulled it like a champ.

I have a 95 F 350 4x4, 5.8, E4OD, and 3.55's. I have pulled a 18 foot car trailer with a 99 4x4 extended cab Chevy on it. Fuel pump went out on it. Go figure, right. No trailer brakes and it pulled it fine. I have also pulled a couplr of derby cars for a buddy of mine with it on the same trailer with no brakes and it pulled them fine, too. The derby cars were stripped out early 80's Olds Ninety Eights. Pulled them down the highway at 60-65 no problem. The owners manual for my truck only rates it to tow 6000 pounds with the 5.8. I think it is rated a little light. Oh well. It has done a good job for me.

for 4 years, i pulled a 17,000 lb mini excavator all over New Jersey with my 88.

but it has a banks turbocharged 7.3 idi diesel in it, and at the time had a 5 speed trans with 4.10 gears, and 40 inch tires on it.

I pulled 18-20K of hay on 2 overloaded hayracks. I have the 300 I6 5spd. I was able to go 25MPH no problem, but the racks started swaying if I went any faster. Going down a hill was scary, and then uphill we topped out at about 18MPH but it was a 4-5% grade (only a short one)
I pull 7K (loaded trailer) (with no trailer brakes and no rear brakes on the truck) fairly often and it tows fine, I can run 65 on most small hills, takes about 3/4 of a mile to get to 60 (takin it easy- shifting at 3K with 3/4 throttle) My trucks has ZF 5 spd and 3.55 gears

i figured i would have no problem pullin it, i was just wonderin how far other guys have had theirs without breakin stuff. not that it wont break stuff, probably will with me behind the wheel, things always happen to me, i think its my last name.

do you think if i just used the peice that i would put the ball in, it would be strong enough? im going to weld it to the frame of my truck on eitherside of the frame.
