I want to get a good locker for my TTB dana 44. I have 3.55 gears. I would prefer a selectable locker, but don't have the money for an ARB. Is there any good selectable lockers out there that use a cable or some other type of engament system? I don't want a full time locker because I live in Oregon where snow and ice is common. And from what I hear lockers up front are bad in snow and ice. How hard would it be to install a selectable locker?
Thanks in advance,
Lars
1988 F-150 4X4 300 I-6, with a Limited slip in the back
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Oct-02 AT 09:40 PM (EST)]I found a trak-loc n ebay. It is for 30 spline axles. What is this, a LS, or a locker? And are they any good? If it is good and I could install it it would be worth it because the price is right.
I also found a dana 44 powerloc, 19 spline. Again what is this a LS, or a locker? It says it will work with 3.73 gears and faster. Will this work with my 3.55's? And how many splines does my truck have( it is TTB)?
Thank you,
Lars
The TTB 44 is 30 spline. if your keeping your 3.55's you will need a carrier that supports 3.73 and numerically lower gears. A limited slip is a good choice, it's better than an open diff off-road, it uses clutches to lock the axles togeather and allows the tires to slip around corners. A lock-right or simlar type locker would probably be hell on the frontend (i have one in my rear axle, and it doesn't like corners at all, it would be worse on TTB) and will be horrible in the winter. I say go with a tru-trac or similar posi, they can be had off ebay for around $100 plus $90 for the install kit through summit.
LS is a limited slip that acts like a locker going straight, but slips around a corner to act like an open. A locker will lock the two axles together so they spin at the same speed, and disengages around a corner. However, it's not usually a smooth quiet operation. The LS or Locker in the front, will not be very safe to drive in the winter. You need a selectable locker or IMO nothing at all. Eaton is coming out with their Electric locker next fall for the TTB, they already have one for an 8.8 rear.
