temp control switch
If that **** is turning freely, that can only mean one thing, the cable assembly is broken. You must open up the front panel first to see what's broken and what's to replace. 96_4wdr is right. That kind of parts is difficult to come by in traditional autopart stores. It's either dealers only or you can try the junkyard.
Good luck

F39Z18518A .. Temperature Control Cable
MSRP: $29.10 / FTEpartsguy.com price: $20.95
The new cable has a spiral-wound steel outer jacket, and is much more durable than the stock plastic housings, or whatever you can find from another car at the scrap yard. I had to make a new clamp to hold the two new cables to the bracket that the old cables were screwed to; I used a clamp piece that came with the generic cable kit. I then curled the inner cable ends so they wrapped around the control sticks. They work, and I'm betting that they will out last any plastic parts that I might have gotten.

I guess my local Ford parts guy was being lazy. He had been before on other parts, and I had to go back a couple times to talk to someone else to get what I was looking for. The other problem is, they closed their doors early this month, as in completely gone. The dealership must have been there for 40 years under different names. Robert Loud/Paradise/Pasadena Ford is no more.
I did think about scrounging the same part from similar cars, such as a Maverick, Comet, or maybe even a Granada. But the real problem was that they are all plastic, and will eventually break just like the original. For some reason, the heater/defrost diverter door on my Mustang is really stiff, even after spraying the gaskets and mating parts with silicon. I just know that a stock plastic replacement cable won't last. This project is a resto-mod, not a factory restoration, so it does not have to have exact replacements.
I guess my local Ford parts guy was being lazy. LOL, so what else is new? He had been before on other parts, and I had to go back a couple times to talk to someone else to get what I was looking for. The other problem is, they closed their doors early this month, as in completely gone.
The dealership must have been there in that same exact location for 40 75 years under different names. Fortner Motor Co/Fortner & Loud/Robert Loud/Paradise/Pasadena Ford is no more.
When I heard they were closing, I called Bob, and got ALL the paper bound parts catalogs (over 60), all the microfiche slides, a Ford microfiche viewer, and a bunch of other stuff. = free.
The front counterman (John) is now at Puente Hills, the back counter man (Joe) is at Wondries. Bob is going into real estate, what his wife does.
New Century in San Gabriel is closing this month.
If you need something, P/M me, I'm actually in Hacienda Heights, and have methods of searching every Ford and obsolete parts dealer in the US & Canada for parts.
