BIGGER tow hooks
Hi all,
After using my little tow hooks several times, I realize that I need bigger ones. The chrome or black hooks you find everywhere are plenty strong and very inexpensive, but don't work very well with larger tow straps.
I've had two straps slide part way off the hook (even with the keepers) and had the hook punch thru and break half of the loop, i.e. destroying the $60 strap.
Newer trucks (and older chebby trucks) have huge hooks from the factory (like 5" diameter and 270 degrees) that keep the strap from coming off.
Aside from a boneyard, does anyone know where to find some of these bigger hooks? I can find a giant clevis, but would prefer a hook.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can order them from NAPA. Just ask for the 40,000 pound ones (?)for a tractor. It is in their Tools/Accessory catalog. They cost about $50 though. The only gotcha would be the size of the bolt hole. If memory serves me correctly it is either 5/8 or 3/4. Much biggger than the 7/16 or 1/2 you find on the 10,000 pound hooks.
FWIW: I carry small bungie cords to help hold the strap in place on the tow hooks so it does not drop off. Though I agree, the 10K hooks are too small for a good 3 inch strap.
