So I took my EX into the dealer to have the oil changed and some other fluids replaced and asked them to look into my puking coolant problem. After a day and a half they did decide that the head gaskets are blown.
I ordered some ARP studs from Farmboys Diesel and they should be here on Thursday. Shipped to me $450. I did find another shop that had an ebay store with the studs for sale for $385 plus $11 shipping, but they were not in stock today.
The dealer wants A LOT of money to replace the gaskets since the truck is out of warranty (111K), so I am taking it to a guy that is a Tech at another dealership that does some work on the side. It should be considerably cheaper.
I was wondering what other mods or deletes might be good to look into since the truck and engine are going to be pulled apart for a while. Any suggestions would be great. I know you guys have them, so throw them at me!
If you have no worries about emissions then you could reroute the CCV and delete the EGR cooler. While you have the intake manifold off, it would be good to get a few cans of carb cleaner and clean that sucker out. I had to use a long screw driver to scrape about 5 years of this build up out of the manifold.
are you sure you want to take it to someone who's already put in a full 8 hours under the hood then do the same thing in his 'off' hours?
I think it would be a much better idea to take it to a truck shop unless you are willing and can afford to wait out any extra down time.
If it's done in a shop with a lift....
is this an experienced diesel tech who's done this repair several times already going to do it in the dealerships shop?
(hint: that's where all his tools are) I know these are expensive repairs...but it's your truck and your decision.
I hear you bench..... He has done this repair with the ARP's before (on the side) Have had lots of good feedback from local PSD owners that know him and have had him do work for them. I am meeting him tomorrow to go over details and see what I am dealing with.
The same concerns have run thru my head already, I'm okay with it. I would love to be able to take care of a couple more mods for the same cost or less than what I would have spent at the dealer for just the head gaskets.

Just throwing this out there to possibly help save you some money. I would have your "new" tech verify you have a head gasket problem. This can be confirmed in minutes with a $50 tester (Uview Combustion Leak Tester).
The reason I say this is it seems odd, but when a 6.0L is taken to the dealer UNDER WARRANTY a lot of them say it is just the pressure cap, or at worst the EGR cooler... oddly enough when you take them there OUT of Warranty they seem to say it is the more expensive problems like head gaskets etc.. Not making any accusations at honest and knowledgable Dealers/Tech, but you never know.
FTX/ Dave,
Thanks for the heads up, I can see this happening..... sneaky dealers. Yes, I will have my "New Guy" check it all out and make sure that is what he thinks the problem is too.
Appreciate it.
