I have a 1994 IDI TD, E4OD, 4x4. I've been having a persistent tach problem - the tach goes dead for an instant or more while driving/idling. This causes the E4OD to go in and out of converter lockup and to downshift - sometimes quite often in/out. I know this is bad.
I have replaced the tach sensor twice - it usually goes away for a few months and then comes back. I have tried to check for corroded wires, removed/checked the inst cluster (seemed OK). I finally took it to the shop in despiration - they replaced the tech sensor again and it stopped for about 4 months now it's back again.
Any ideas?
Bad sensors from Ford?
Bad E4OD computer (tranny was rebuilt 2 yrs ago)?
Is there any way to bypass the tach or trick the CPU so it doesn't do this any more?
First check all the connections on the rear of the guage cluster/PSOM....... I will PM you my email addy, contact me if you would like the 93/4Tach test.
overlay the tach sensor wires to the pcm , i would believe one may be broken in the harness and when disturbed while replacing the tach sensor it makes contact again for a while
overlaying the wires is a quick and easy way to eliminate the most prominent cause
