my truck just the other day wouldnt go in 4low so today took the motor off, took the whole thing apart greased the gear and shaft and took some buildup off the electric motor, now it works dont really know what changed but just a thought for some of u to try a free and fairly easy fix
and its easy taking the motor off, 4 bolts for the damper, and 5 for the motor/gear housing, taking the motor and gear housing apart is only another 6 bolts, 3 of them were t 15 bolts however
Ok i finally got it fixed tonight it was a prong broke off of the plug that goes to the motor, bypassed the wire and it works great now,but if anyone is interested i stoped by the local junkyard and picked up a used 4x4 control module part#1L54-7h417-ac if anybody needs one i have it and i checked to see if it was good.As for the motor it was easy to replace.thanks for everyones help.kevin
I am very interested in this part. My dads ranger seems to need this and I could not find one at the junk yard. Please email me at lbarto3512@aol.com.
If the numbers match i would be glad to send it to you,i payed $75 but will let it go for $50,i know its good because i tested it on my truck.thanks kevin
Let me think about it. The junkyard I went today would have been 5 or 10 dollars for the part. My dad is afraid to spend the money on it and then it does not fix it. I will have to wait and see if he changes his mind.
Take it apart and see if there are any burnt spots on it ir if it smells burnt, also i checked with ford when i bought my control module and they wanted $450 for the 4x4 control module new, so if you can find one for $5 or $10 i would go for it.wished i could have found one that cheap.what model is the truck and what have you checked maybe we could help you out.

It is a 2001 ranger xlt. It does not light up any 4x4 lightswhen it is started. I does not go into 4x4 at all, no clicks or noises. When I pulled the plugs out of the module they had green corosion on the bottom few pins on each plug.
Guy's, I can't say this enough, use your 4wd at least once a month in both ranges to keep it operating properly. Even if it's just moving the truck backwards and forward in the drive way. It's easy to use 4-high, just find a strench of straight road and shift into 4-high on the fly. It won't hurt it to run in 4-high on a dry road as long as your not doing alot of turning. You can even use 4-low on dry surfaces as long as you don't turn. Turning is what causes the system to bind on a dry surface. It needs to be able to slip when turning, as long as your going straight, no problem. This will help keep the system operating properly all year round.

I would think even if the shift motor is bad you would still get a click from the 4x4 control module so it sounds like that is were you should start.that control module should be lacated behind the passenger side kick panel.
I'm not saying you haven't used your 4wd. I was just making a general statement. Alot a times guy's won't engage thier 4wd for months or even years. With regular use it will keep things from getting gummed up and cut down on corrosion and what have you. There's an old saying, "if you don't use it, you loose it".
Hey guys, I havent visited in awhile(only when I have a problem), NEway my 4 wheel didn't work the other day(when I needed it the most) and it was working last week. No lights on the instrument panel and no clicking noises. I ordered the 4x4 control module. new part #1L5Z7E453AC, I ordered it Tues. 1/27/09 and recieved it today 1/29/09. I pluged it in and within 5 minutes, I had 4 WD again. I got it from what used to directfordparts.com, I don't recall what it is now,(silverstatefordparts)mabey. The dealer in town wanted $222.00, I got it for $118.00 plus delivery of course. Good luck!

Anyone ever experience the truck not coming out of 4 low? (02 Ranger FX4) A friend of mine just asked me so I did a quick search and came upon this thread...which by the way is very helpful. I told him to make sure he shifted the tranny into N before coming out of 4 low.
