My cluster took a **** (after trying to fix the loud dinger) and I found a same year replacement for it on ebay, (2005 cluster for my 2005 van) and I want to know if the cluster that I buy will show the real miles. The van has about 100k on it, the cluster I am looking at shows 199k. I would hate to pay for an extra hundred thousand miles, but at the same time, I dont want to have any odometer discrepencies. Can I buy the meter and have the dealer adjust the miles to true or what has to be done ? That is not my style. I just need some straight advice without me spending lots of $ to find out myself. I understand this may be an issue and sending me a PM may be the best answer.
Mileage is stored in the cluster. I am sure a dealer can run up mileage when replacing a new cluster, BUT I am not sure they can turn back mileage due to federal law.
There is an XLT and a Lariat cluster on Ebay right now (either will work in an XL or XLT), not sure of the mileage on them. Do a search and see what mileage they state.
EDIT: NEVERMIND, the clusters I saw on Ebay were for Diesels.
im pretty sure when the dealer orders a new cluster they give the mileage over the phone so the dealer doesnt have the capability to change the mileage
Some major vehicle rebuilders have a pc with a special program installed with a set of cords which attach to the printer port. The cord will plug into the on the bench speedo cluster. They can access the mileage and change it to whatever is needed or desired. It is usually a mail order service with quick turn around times. If you do a few searches , you should lock onto what I am saying. Happens all the time.
