i'm getting a poping from the exhaust at idle and uder a load
1987 f350 5.8l carb cap rotor wires coil all new
engine has about 10000 miles
i'm thinkin maybe a cracked spark plug?
thanks
will
Well a "guess" never had heard it is just that, a guess! lol
A miss is not generally described as a "pop". If it "pops" each time one particular piston hits on a compression stroke out the exhaust and is heavier and louder under load that sounds like a exhaust valve issue.
If the pop is out the intake it would lead to a intake valve problem.
When a valve doesn't close all the way and seal it tends to make a pop noise.
Again, hard to say without hearing it.
A cracked spark plug leaking would be heard coming from under the hood near the motor, not out the exhaust pipe.
If it needs a tune up you could start with that but I'd compression test it being as I had all the plugs out anyway. It would quickly eliminate a valve leak as the cause of the problem if every cylinder checked out.
yes it is from under the hood area
sorry about that
i could call you and put the phone next to it and you could listen and fix over the phone
hahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
just kidding
thanks for the help i'm looking for ideas and you have realy gave me a place to look i'll get new plugs and do a compression check tommorrow
thanks again
will
changed the plugs on right side they looked fine
started on left side the last cyl was wet so i went to do a compr. test and got nothing so i tried another cyl on same side nothing again the dam tester was leaking by. so i put the new plugs in and she started right and no poping
Maybe the plug wires were mixed up before, firing the wrong cyl. @ the wrong time. Poor or no combustion will cause wet plugs and if the noise was under hood, I'd suspect firing into the intake.
i'll check that but i havent changed the wires in 2 years
new plugs fixed it for about a hour now same poping if you bring the rpm's up say i 2nd gear i wont do it . i wondering if it dist. related. its very strange
i would replace the wires, mabye a new cap and rotor. you might just clean your cap and rotor, also if you look at your cap and if the points are ate up pretty good and your rotors boogerd i would say you have bad wires and possibly a bad coil. this fixed my truck when it would not run right.

Your original post said, iirc, new wires etc. 2 yrs old is FAR from new.
