front axle swap

i have a 92' F-150 2wd and in process of converting it to 4wd. i have done a search and all i found were people using leaf springs. i am going to use the factory coills, with a 78' bronco D44. i'm going to do this no matter what, becouse i have all the parts lying around. i just want to hear from someone who has done this just for a heads up on what i'm going to run into, besides the odvious.

Toad,
This is not in response to your question. I wanted to ask you something but I couldn't find your contact info.

I see you own a V-10 and 7.3 PSD. I'm looking to buy a used 2000-2002 F250 and would like your advise. The price for either is about the same.

I tow a 7000# travel trailer when we go camping and camp about a dozen times a year. I currently pull it with my F150 5.4 but find it under powered if I encounter any hill. Other than that, I drive it 4 miles each way to work. I put about 5-8K miles a year on it.

How do they compare with power, mileage, maintenance, reliability?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

to do the swap i would go look at a vehicle the same model as yours, but 4wd. compare what is different and what can be used from the 2wd. i have not done this myself but i helped a buddy of mine and it is pretty straight forward, especially since your using a solid axle. basically you shouldnt run into any problems, i think we did my buddies in a day. so not real hard, unless you brake bolts or cant get them loose.

ha another SAS on the way (one day soon i will begin my journey from the darkside of TTB)

anyways snoop round here for while TONS of good stuff Solid Axle Swaps - FSB Forums

that axle is the best axle you can use for the swap...yours being a 2wd it will be different from mine but i think its pretty much straight forewar depending on how you want to do it

some guys spend 7k and take a year to do it
some spend $300 and do it in their driveway on their day off

some people weld a bit but ive heard some say its straight bolt up...biggest thing to worry about is the steering i think it was the 92-96 F250 tie-rod and drag link that works for your setup so theres no cutting welding to do on the rods

ive done the same exact swap my friend take a look at my galery and you will see what it would look like with a 9 inch lift, but ne ways when youre doin this swap you have to use at least 6 inch lift coils or else the pumpkin wont clear the motor crossmember,as for the radius drop brackets you want to mount them 2 inches forwarb of the tranny cross member bolts on the frame that a way it wont dog walk but make sure you measure 2 or 3 times front to rear or it will dog walk,um lets see oh your gonna have to mount a track bar, what i did was use the 78 track bar bracket off the frame and bolt it to my steering box holes on the outside of the frame, and your gonna have to fab up a drag link consisting of your factory upper parts wich bolts to your pitman arm ,and the lower part from the 78 wich connects to your steering on the axle,if ne of this make any since if you have ne more ?'s just ask man ill be happy to walk you through it !

with his truck he can use the factory drag link/tie rod setup from a f250/350 of the same year so that he doesnt have to cut or weld or measure anything and then keep his stock pitman arm

on the trac bar mount up you steering arms first because you want the trac bar and the drag link to be parallel (looking from the front end)
