I'm working on my dads 91 f-350 dually, 460 auto, it had an exhaust leak the rear passenger exhaust manifold, the bolt in the head was broken and I broke 2 more while pulling the head, bolts were broken in the head, so I pulled it. I had the bottom rear head bolt snap off on me, there is still plenty sticking out, had a heck of a time getting the head off of it. Does anyone have any solutions for getting the broken bolt out, I have used plenty of pb blaster on it, and a torch with no luck. Any ideas would be great.
Has anyone else even had a head bolt break, I have never done one and neither has my dad, he's been working on fords since the 60's
I was trying to figure out how you actually broke a head bolt. What you broke are exhaust manifold bolts and it happens all the time. You can drill them out, retap or heli-coil the hole. You will probably have to pull the head if they are broken off flush with the head. Otherwise, keep spraying and using vise grips (a better tool is an actual stud remover) to move it back and forth until they come loose. Try not to break them off.
the rear exhaust manifold bolt was broken, I broke 2 more trying to get the manifold off, had the motor hot and worked them, they just snapped. So I pulled the head off, I am taking the head to the machine shop to have the bolts removed. But my problem is I broke the rear, bottom head bolt off, It is rusted in the block in the same hole as the locating dowel. The head bolt broke off with about 3 inches or so sticking out of the hole. I used a stud puller, pb blaster, and a torch on it, can't get it out.

If you have enough torch, heat the broken bolt until it is red hot then let it cool. Then try removing it. This usually worked on the marine engines, even salt water ones.
I have never heard of a head bolt breaking! How long of a cheater did you have on it? LOL!!
That was exactly my thought when I read this thread. I was no whimp in my youth and I never even came close with a head bolt, even the little whimpy Chevy ones.
haha, I'm just that strong, really I had a 4 foot bar on it and still took all I had, I put oil on it and tried to work it out, but figured it had to come out one way or another. No matter how tight or rusty they have been I've never seen one break. Does anyone know about that candle trick? I have heard of it but never knew how to do it, and can't rember what it takes.
Thanks
