the 318 was the crap box of mopars... not a very famous motor for horse power nor for gas mileage... you generally dont see them in race cars, and never see them thrown under the hood for miles per gallon... although you can build them with some time and money to have more HP or more MPGs... either way, stock they are crummy motors...
i would personally just keep my eye out for a decent truck on craigslist for under 500 dollars, and buy it... rip the motor and tranny... and scrap the rest...
Got under the truck tonight (yeah yeah I've taken my time) and I have learned two things. There is no catalytic converter, and there is a lambda sensor! I found that surprising as cars over here generally didn't have them unless they were running some form of injection or management system (i.e 88 on golf mk2 gti, PB digifant engine). Would this mean that some form of management (weber alpha, omex as a couple of examples) could be employed as a performance modification?
Still struggling to find a V8, there is an 5.0 econoline for sale fairly locally but its £750, justifiable price to rip the engine out and weigh the rest in for scrap? I could break it (part it out) but that could take years to be rid of the bits!
