I am preparing for Spring wheelin by getting a tool kit rounded up. I have the basic tools (wrenches/sockets/pliers/electrical tape/wire) but i believe i need more.
What should a Off-Roader have with them when roading?

You are off to a good start. It does not mater what you carry. The one tool that you will need is the tool that you do not have with you.
how about your basic spare parts? such as u-joints and things that can break on your vehicle that you can fix on the trail. also you might want to look at carrying extra motor oil, antifreeze, all the other essential fluids that are needed to make your vehicle run. happy wheeling and good luck

i have to agree, i dont remember who said it, but i am going to be missing that one tool when i am out on the trail, no matter how many other tools i have with me.
I think i am going to gather up a high lift, straps, come-alongs, chains, tow rope, fliuds, spare u-joints, wire tape, hoses belts, and a large *** tool box to carry any tool that i can throw in there.
thanks for your insights. it has all been very helpful. I hope i can be prepared when spring comes.
I have found having a shovel, axe, and some 2x10 planks handy.
Since a 78 F-250 probably tips the scales at 6,000+ pounds, I would take 2x12s, screw them together, and on one side add 2x2 "steps" every 12 inches or so. It makes an excellent self recovery ramp in deep goo with an open diff.
A comealong is basicly a hand powered winch. I got a 2500lbs one for about $30. You should be able to get them at most hardware stores and or rach suplly stores.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Dec-02 AT 04:08 PM (EST)]here is what i carry. pretty much what everyone else carries and maybe more: high lift jack, tow straps (short and long, i carry 3 total), tie down straps, wood planks, shovel, come-along, and at least a basic tool kit to include wrenches, hammers, ratchets, sockets, vice grips, screw drivers, pliers, spare electrical wire, leatherman or gerber (comes in handy because you dont have to dig for it in yer tool box because it is right on your side at all times, ALL fluids(radiater, water, ATF, power steering, gear lube, radiater stop leak, ATF stop leak, etc), a funnel, WD-40, a sqeegy to scrape the mud off the windows and headlights to see, and anything else you have EVER used to work on your truck. spare parts: u-joints, wheel bearings, spindles, d-shafts (if you have em), a hub or two, radiater hoses, heater hoses, spare head light(for the trip home if i break one on the trail so i dont get pulled over), i carry EVERYTHING that i own tool wise in my truck tool box. you never know what you will break (and you WILL)and where (at home, the store/gas station, some trail or mud hole out in B F E, i have broke at all of the above and more). i dont leave my house with out all these items in my truck tool box. WOW i carry a lot in my truck. i didnt realize i carried so much. you dont need all this, its what i carry, but it will come in handy if yop ever need it

wow i carry a bit smaller amount. All i have as far as tools is all sizes of wrenches on the truck (from smallest to biggest and everything inbetween), screwdrivers, cresentwrenches, leatherman, good lockblade knife, paper and pen (this way you can send someone into town for a prt and you can continue working)and a rag. I also have a spare tire, tire iron, antifrezze watter mix, quart of oil and brake fluid, highlift adn hydrolic jacks, comealong, 10'towrope and 30'of steelcable whith a doubler for the comealong (so i can use all that cable and double the efective pulling power of the comealong), basic first aid kit. But just remeber never go out alone and youll be good.
thats what i forgot, a spare tire. guess i need to get one of those in a 35 inch tire just in case. and yes a buddy or two is nice for when u get crazy and get stuck.

two words for ya guys... FUEL FILTER. Off roading stirs up all the muck in your tank and ya better believe its gonna clog on the trail if it'll clog anywhere.
Why not just demuck your tank now, at home, where it's easy? It's like going off-roading with a bad battery and just leaving the truck running all the time; just fix it before you go.
I drive like a maniac all the time, so I'll never have to worry about it.
