6637 question

I'm looking at getting a 6637 w/ pete's cover in the near future. My question is has anyone had any problems running one in heavy snow? I'm not sure what my concerns are but possibly icing up and getting restricted?

I realize I am not exactly in the snow belt of Michigan, but I do my damnest to get there, and no problem in the year and half I have had it.

Not a problem in Montana. I use a piece of panty hose for a cover.

I have the 6637 and plow snow, I have snow packed into the grill for days at a time which normally turns into a block of ice and I NEVER had a problem. I have checked on it just in case and it never even gets damp. There is enough heat in there to keep things warm and dry and snow out.

Best time to get the 6637 is October. IIRC Napa has a 70% discount sale on airfilters in October.

Thats some good info Jacob, but the nearest Napa to me is like 50 miles the other side of BFE to me. Maybe if I'm around that area next month I'll check them out.

If you do make it to napa it would be a good time to stock up. I am about 90% sure the sale is in October.(can't remember if the NTPA announcer said september or october.)

It's been a while since I've poked my head into a 6637 discussion, but the bolded part of the quote has me concerned.

I remember from several years ago when the 6637 discussion was all over the board, the question came up about the use of PVC pipe to connect the filter to the intake. The general concensus was this: It's probably not a good idea. There is the potential, however slight, but the potential for the PVC to get soft from the heat of the underhood conditions, flex and leak dirty air in. I know the stock intake has the plastic piece in it where the CCV connects, but it's designed for the underhood temps.

The preferred material to use is a metal tube of some sort...4" exhaust tubing works very well and may be had for free. Go into your local big rig shop (most people have some sort of International, Kenworth, Peterbuilt, etc... dealar & service shop around them) and ask them for a 4" piece of 4" exhaust tubing. I got mine for free, as it was scrap they had lying around. I'd think that would be pretty common for shops to have small scraps like that lying around. Worst case, you have to buy a 1' section of it.

Or, you can find several places online that sell sections of the tube, and most have aluminum available if you wanted to polish it up for a little more bling bling under the hood.

Or just go to a muffler shop, they'll cut you a 4" piece to fit and charge you $5, maybe $10 if they are tight wods.

Only problem I had with the muffler shops around here is I couldn't find anything bigger than 3" - 3.5" there. The big rig shops were the only ones that had 4" tubing here in my neck of the woods. I'm sure it's different everywhere.

Point is, you should be able to find some 4" metal tubing somewhere. Shoot, some 4" metal conduit, like big electrical conduit, would probably even work.

Jeremy, I hadn't heard any discussion about the PVC melting/softening until you just mentioned it, thanks for bringing that up. I have plans to swap my ABS out soon for 4" exhaust, I have the exhaust just need to cut it up.
