I'm looking to buy an 86 F250 w/6.9L Diesel. It has 144k miles and had the headgaskets/glow plugs replaced around 20k miles ago. It also has a rebuilt pump on it as well.
How durable (Service Life ? mileage ?) are these engines and what issues do I need to be aware of on them ?
85 and 86 6.9l engines were the strongest longest lasting engines International ever made for Ford. 83 and 84 6.9s had some lower block problems and 88-94 7.3s were bad about rubbing a hole in the cylinder wall. Properly cared for, they will last forever, it is not uncommon to see them with 300k and still ticking strong.
I have worked the crap out of mine since day one.
At 300K I rebuilt it with a few extras.
When I did the rebuild the engine was still running great, the oil consumption was getting rather costly though.
Now sitting at 431K.
