I have been thinking up of a generator setup for my truck. I may try it on this one but maily would like to have it on a box truck which I would like to purchas in the future (with an IDI of course) anyway,I currently use a 5,000 watt continuse 10,000 watt surge power inverter. I can use my lincon mig welder off of this inerter connected to my truck batterys along with hand grinders and cutoff saws.. ect. It actually welds very good even cranked all the way up. Well, If I go ahead and get a box van, I would like to be able to mount a large generator underneath ran off the main engine but not sure how to drive it pto wise. It seems like I can get up to a 50kw 3 phase 240v generator head for a little over $1400 which would adiquitly run my Miller stick welder and quite a few other acceries while not even loading it down. I don't think I need 50kw for anything but if the generator don't cost that much more, why not have it. It would also serve as a backup generator in power outages as well.
First off, How can I run a pto setup with an E40D tranny If possible. The generator needs to turn at about 1800 rpm while in use. Any Ideas??
The reason I say 50kw is theres plenty of power under the hood to run one. Why get a 5-10kw when you can have 50kw. MORE POWER!!!
Also, I have mentioned it to several others that have been looking for a large complet home backup generator that costs lots more. I think you should be able to hook up a cheap generator head somewhere on your truck and use it to power your house during power outages. Having a backup generator is almost like a wast of a good engine if you can use an engine you already have. Really, How many hours do you think a back up generator really gets.
Anyway if any yall have done this or have any better Idears let me know. Thanks
WOW thats what I need. I somewhat need it longer with a flatter floor and cab/cargo access (i guess i could just knock a hole in that one though) Then I can have cabinets below the box. That sure has everything else I could ever need. I could sure use the sirens and lights in rush hour traffic sometimes in the city.
Yeah, you would have to get a manual(someone tell me I'm stupid if the zf5 spd doesn't have pto). I would get a PTO on the truck, they sell PTO generators to go behind tractors all the time. I have two 40kw PTO generators, which is plenty, one of those will run anything you ever need to run. You could do like me, I have an 83 F350 welder body with MULTIQuip Kubota Diesel welder/generator on the back. But thats me, and I do a lot of welding that a little lincoln 110 volt wouldn't cut it.

I got one. Its a lincon 200amp from 1979 but it runs great and is on our old welder truck. But thats big. I would like a smaller setup to run my Miller 250 unit (not sure on exact model though) Im in the same boat with the 110 volt mig. Theres just some stuff that will not tie in very well with the little mig where the stick works great. I can probably live with a standard tranny I just need to find the box truck/van that has one so I don't have to swap over. I did have an old 1984 half tone econoline with a 4 speed behind a 302. Do you know what tranny that probably was???
You could get a Dodge with a Getrag 5-speed and an NP 205 and then you would have THREE PTO outlets!
Sorry couldn't resist.
Actually this idea you have is REALLY intriguing, makes good sense for emergency power for your home. Especially if you have another truck to do your running around in while your faithful IDI is powering your house.
I bought a Cheapo 8500 Watt generator that had never been run for 450 bucks, some of the best money I ever spent. Hasn't let me down yet, of course it's not a Honda and it's louder but I keep it in my '86 service truck and it muffles the sound pretty well.
There are 6 bolt covers on either side of my ZF5... How do I attach anything to them? Also what RPM do they put out? Are they gearred down any way from engine RPM or are they equal to engine RPM?
Most of those PTO generators take like 520 RPM or something from a tractor.
if you get a F-350 4EOD with 4x4, at the transfercase is also a PTO outlet, and if you can't do anything with driveaxles and belts, or even chains, you still can use a hydraulic pump/motor combo to run your generator off...
Good-luck,
I have also seen under hood alternators to supply AC power in varying sizes.
Belt driven, but that may be a challenge since space is already at a premium.
