Changed PCM and now I have ANOTHER code!

Doug sent me a PCM, to help me diagnose a problem with my E4OD and I threw it in today... I disconnected both batteries before hooking up the new PCM, but couldn't get the old one out.. (What's the trick, to make it clear the wheel well????)

I test drove the truck and put 13 miles on it. I still had/have no O/D light and still in limp mode..

Once I got it home, I managed to get the instrument panel trim off to see if the check engine light bulb was blown, so I could check the PCM codes (Only to find that it has NO check engine light!) With no C/E light, I used a test light in the computer connector. I got all the same codes I had before, plus a new code... Here's what I got:

56

23

91

92

93

94

and the "New" code: 99

I have a solenoid pack on the way and hope I can get this transmission problem solved once and for all!

I know one thing.... I'm getting as intimately familiar with this truck, as I did with the 87.. These trucks will force you to learn them!!

i still say you have a power problem to the transmission solenoid connector
there should be two red wires both shoudl have vehicle power with the key on
dont waste time testing the pcm relay etc , its good or you wouldnt be able to retrieve codes

When I tested the trans connector, I had +12v to the red wire I couldn't tell the colors of the others, but had +0.31v on four of the other wires. I will be cleaning the wires up and checking the connector a lot more closely now.

I also learned that there is supposed to be a heat shield, protecting this plug. All I found, was a bolt in the side of the trans case. The plug itself is not melted, but who knows what damage was done. When I get this thing working again, I will fab myself up a new heat shield.

I did have +12v at the two red wires that go to the PCM. Forgot to mention that earlier.

i,m talking about the two red wires at the transmission connector
whenever the pcm is giving codes for all of the solenoids it is generally a power interuption to the solenoid pack , it is rare but possible that the connector has broken its lead where it is soldered to the solenoid packs circuir board , you could check this by plugging a good solenoid pack into the wiring harness under the truck and run a KOEO test and see if you recieve all pass codes , if so the solenoid pack is defective

I have a known-good pack arriving on Wednesday and will check it out!

Gary

BTW: I guess I was wrong, when I said there was only one red wire going to the pack. I couldn't really tell what the other wire colors were. I'm also sure the heat shield being missing, hasn't helped anything at all. I am glad, that it hasn't melted the connector!

Thank you, ford trans tech, for all your help AND being so patient with me!

the diesels had two red wires at the trans and gas only had one , all replacements packs had one of the wire terminals eliminated from it and used an internal jumper to connect the terminals together
so dont be alarmed if the other pack has a terminal missing
