There are obvious advantages to efi systems, automatic fuel curve adjustments, general drivability with no time spent tuining. MPG is usually better and if you're into pretty extreme off roading the off angle advantage is awesome.
SDFI though is not the best efi system out there, it has it's limitations.
There are also advantages to running a carb. Bare bones simplicity. Greater tuning range. More power potential (usually lets not split hairs). Fewer components ie less to go wrong.
Head to head sdfi vs carb?
I hear ya. My sister has a Mazda sport somethin. had to put a new water pump in it little while back, swear to god the 8 year old tiwaneese kid who put that thing together had really little hands, and I suspect he was double jointed.
Lots to be said for simplicity thats one vote for the carb.
A carb would be a shoe-in for my vote except for one thing...cold start reliability. And I don't mean when the engine is cold...I mean those -20º, two feet of snow cold starts.
Altitude compensation and smog legality in Kalifornistan are the two best features of EFI, IMO. If I could legally run a carb in Calif, it'd be really tempting to grab some aluminium heads, a manifold and carb and build a torquey tow motor...
In a month or two, when I've got my planned motor work done (small cam, milled heads, headers, 3 1/2" exhaust) I'll really know if EFI is any good. If I can get 300+ HP out of my SDEFI and still pass Calif smog then I'll be an EFI convert.
