My 1985 F150 lwb std cab , 300 cid six cylinder has a C-4 transmission in it. I would like to change to a AOD for better fuel economy. Will I need to change out drive shafts? How does the length of the AOD compare to the C-4? I use this as my go to work vehicle (13 miles each way all highway miles), drag the sailboat to the lake (18 ft Sanibel about 1800#s with trailer) Once or twice a year put my 8N Ford or tow a Lark home from some barn.
hmmm, the aod is about 3 inches longer, there are tailshaft implications - your truck should have the short c4 one, and you need to find the 'shortshaft' aod. you also want a later AOD - say 1990ish to get a few updates that were standard.
the crossmember can be used, but you will be making a new mount. got a welder?
both should have 164teeth flexplates, just get one with the correct balance for the I6.
You must use the throttle cable, and from whatever the donor is, get the tranny wiring harness and splice into whatever you have to get neutral and reverse indication.
You will need to modify the driveshaft, UNLESS the donor has one. If the donor is 89 or 90 then the axle yoke is 1 inch closer than the 9" you prolly have
