need opinions
Ok, now what I'm planning on doing is pulling the timing set out of my 429 w/bad bearings (68 set). Rods/mains (can't find anything but ford part numbers so I'm guessing they are std size). Rings seem OK, clean pistions and reinstall. Brass freeze plugs, Replace lifters, might use heads off of the 429 (D3VE) can't find the numbers on the 85 engine.
What do you guys recommend as far as a replacement balance, etc?
the 429 crank will be an internal balanced crank where as the 85 460 crank is an external balanced crank (should have what looks like a hatchet spacer behind the balancer) the flywheels are also different. you have to use the correct spacer and flywheel from whatever crank you are using. Ford switched to external balanced in mid 79 (and they never made a 429 after i think 76 or 77), so your 85 460 is external balanced.
the 429 crank will not fit into the 85 block (block should be a D9TE block, number is above the starter) as the 85 block uses longer cylinder walls that will hit the counterwights on the 429 crank. you can make it fit, but requires a lot of grinding of the block. also the 429 and 460 pistons are different. the rods are the same though.
the heads if stock should be the same. the 85 should use the D3VE heads or a copy of those heads if stock.
i would also for what it costs, get a new timing set from a pre 70 429/460. this is the straight up timing set and really helps wake the older engines up a bit.

Over a year ago I put new bearings, straight up timing set, hv oil pump, and performer 460 intake on, but the timing cover leaked so I had the shop fix it while they were putting the exhaust on. (swapped to L&L fenderwells
) I can't prove it but when I got it home it was almost out of oil....so I'm guessing someone drained and forgot to refill after doing the cover gasket........ Engine never used any oil after I refilled and ran it, but I would loose oil pressure at idle. Pulled a few bearings and they were toast. Thus the reason I'm yanking it out for the 460. Got the cover off last night and it's got the nylon timing gear so I'm definately putting the pre 70 chain on. As far as I know the heads are stock, so if they are the same then I guess it doesn't matter which ones go on then. Anyone every use the cheap balance's from summit? Made by Pioneer, or should I use one of the more expensive ones?
