You don't need to change your carrier unless you want to upgrade to a limeted slip or locker. The 8.8 carriers don't use a carrier break like dana 44's. You will however need to upgrade your front axle carrier to a lower ratio carrier... dana 44's have a ratio break at 3.73.
i think i may already have a limited slip. When i was roosting all over my firends chevy the other day there were two piles of mud on it, one was a tiny bit bigger than the other. I also left 2 strips in my dads garage. The axle code is 18 or 19 i beleive and thats not factory limited slip right?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-10-03 AT 10:14 PM (EST)]That's correct Mook, a factory LS unit will have a letter before a number in the door jamb code, like H6. The original rear was an open unit from the factory. Sombody swapped in a rear or took the time to put in a unit.
Well you definetly will need a carrier. I dont know how much it will cost. it all depends on if you wanna go with a locker or an open diff and if you want to go with a carrier with no spider gears in it and put the spider gears in yourself from your old carrier or if you wanna buy a whole loaded carrier. Id checkout drivetrain warehouse. all their drivetrain parts are guarenteed for life and they have free shipping too!
Once again...you do not need a new carrier unless you wish to upgrade. 8.8 carriers will work with every gear ratio made for them from 2's all the way to 4 or 5's. The difference is in the gear thickness in 8.8 ring gears, not in the carrier like in dana 44 axles. BUT, if your truck is 4wd and your changing the front axle gears as well, you will need a carier.
