Clunk from 4x4 system

'87 BII 5 spd manual transmission manual shift transfer case and stock manual hubs. Played in a little mud yesterday, and when I got back on the highway to go to the next little trail, I put the T-case in 2H, but didn't unlock the hubs. On the highway, the truck drove heavier than it usually does with the hubs locked in 2H for a little bit. Then a "bang" (like when you hit a pothole) and it loosens up to normal. Got to the next little trail and checked the hubs and transfer case, and they all lock and release like normal.
Just looking for ideas of things to check.

Possibly mud on the linkages? I'd bet that you didn't quite get it in 2H like you thought you did due to dirty linkages. I'd also bet, clean them good lubricate them well and everything will be fine. But then I've been wrong before. I wouldn't worry about it though since everything is working fine now. Until it becomes a repeat problem, don't repeat thinking about it.
